<image:title>Window Tour - The Nativity of Our Lord</image:title>
<image:caption>The picture window series begins with this depiction of the Jesus’ birth as told in the Gospel of Luke. The stable is shown in the simple wooden architecture framing the window itself with the night sky as a distant backdrop. From the upper lefthand corner, the star of the Epiphany shines down to the infant Christ. To his left kneels his mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, depicted in a blue cloak. Looking on from behind stands St. Joseph. In his left hand he holds a long lily stalk, another symbol of the Virgin Mary. The infant Jesus’ right hand is raised, holding up two fingers in solemn blessing. The caption reads: The Word was made flesh & dwelt among us (John 1:14). Several of the captions are especially interesting. This one comes from the Gospel of John, and it focuses on the cosmic nature of the Incarnation. Much of the spirituality of the late 19th century emphasized the moral and social implications of Jesus coming to be one with us. This window invites us to reflect on new things in our lives and new ways that God breaks into the world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Teaching in the Temple</image:title>
<image:caption>The second scene, Jesus Teaching in the Temple, only appears in the Gospel of Luke. Alone of the four Gospels, Luke tells us a story from Jesus’ youth. When he was twelve years old, Jesus and his parents went to Jerusalem. When the time came to leave, Jesus remained behind. Assuming he was with relatives, Mary and Joseph did not know he had stayed. Returning to Jerusalem to look for the boy, they found him in the temple listening to the teachers and asking questions as if he were one of them. Here in the window, the youthful and beardless Jesus sits with his legs crossed, the traditional pose for a teacher in antiquity. Jesus is speaking to two teachers while two scrolls and a book round out the scene. Jesus is depicted with the traditional cruciform halo and again has his right hand raised in solemn blessing. The caption reads: Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business. This window invites us to reflect on the moments and people that formed us as beloved children of God.</image:caption>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/60df44aee6f3a31121baa8ab/1675698407645-Z52ANKY5B579UD41FK79/PictureWindow3_Baptism.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Window Tour - Baptism of Our Lord</image:title>
<image:caption>Originally, this window and the next window – The Last Supper – would have been positioned directly behind the altar, placing the two Dominical Sacraments (meaning instituted by the Lord) at the visual center of the church. In this scene, John the Baptist – wearing a garment of camel skin – pours water on the head of Jesus. The stream of water mirrors the rays of light coming from the Dove representing the intimate connection between baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit. In many respects, Jesus is a passive figure in this scene, bowing his head meekly. However, his right hand is still raised in blessing. Two other features stand out. First, John uses a scallop shell to pour the water. No gospel texts indicate how Jesus was baptized, but the use of the shell – typically a silver replica of a shell – was common churches at the time. The anachronistic image of Jesus’ baptism reinforces contemporary practice. Lastly, John carries a standard with the Latin phrase ‘Ecce Agnus Dei’ or ‘Behold the Lamb of God’. In the Gospel of John, John the Baptist points to Jesus with this phrase. While it comes from one of the baptismal narratives, it is also the phrase used by the priest in Catholic masses when presenting the Eucharist to the people. Since this window would have originally been behind the altar, this image gently reinforces a higher theology of Holy Communion. The caption reads: Except a man be born of Water and the Spirit cannot enter the kingdom of God. Also note that Jesus’ feet are blue since they are underwater. While this is common in stained glass depictions of the baptism, it’s cute nonetheless. This window asks us to think about the choices we make in our lives and the ways we open ourselves up to transformation and growth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Last Supper</image:title>
<image:caption>Also originally positioned directly behind the altar is the scene of the Last Supper. Central to this image are the chalice and the bread. A plate also appears prominently in the foreground. The disciples on the left appears to be seated, while the disciple on the right almost appears to be kneeling. The two partial faces look up to Jesus, while the two in the foreground are looking at the chalice. Jesus himself, hand again in blessing, faces directly out toward the viewer. A curtain is drawn to one side behind Jesus. The caption reads: Whoso eateth my flesh & drinketh my blood hath eternal life. Taken together, the elements of this scene emphasize a high theology of the Eucharist. Like the disciples, the viewer’s eyes are drawn to the gold chalice in the center. Rather than participating in a meal, the viewer is brought into a sense of adoration. The curtain evokes a sense of a veil being parted revealing a spiritual reality behind it. The caption could even be understood as nodding toward a sense of transubstantiation – the doctrine that the bread and wine of Holy Communion become in essence the flesh and blood of Jesus. In the late 19th century within the Episcopal Church, this doctrine was only held by the Ritualists. This window helps us give thanks for the gifts that sustain us as we go through our lives.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - The Raising of the Son of the Widow of Nain</image:title>
<image:caption>The story of the raising of the Son of the Widow of Nain appears only in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 7:11-16). Jesus meets a funeral procession outside of the town of Nain. At the time, a widow who had no son would have been a vary precarious position socially. She would have undoubtedly fallen into destitution. This story parallels the story of Elijah raising the son of the widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17-24), and both stories conclude with people recognizing a prophet among them. In the window here, Jesus greets the bier of the young man, his hand raised in the familiar two fingered blessing. The widow kneels in the foreground. The bier is surrounded by the crowd, some of whom look on, some who look out on us, the viewers. In the background are the stylized – and highly anachronistic – walls of the town of Nain. The simple caption reads: Young man, I say to thee Arise. Below the caption is the dedication to George Kneeland (1859-1883). Presumably, this memorial represents the gift of the whole picture window series. This window asks us to reflect on the people who have sustained us when we struggled and also on the ways we have supported others.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Deposition from the Cross</image:title>
<image:caption>Originally, this window and the next window (The Ascension) would have been located on the right hand side of the altar. Interestingly, the picture window series does not include an image of the crucifixion. Instead, we have the scene of Jesus being taken down from the cross (However, it is possible that this would have been needed if a crucifix were present in the center of the altar.). Jesus, with the cruciform halo, is depicted in an idealized form. Four other figures stand in for the various figures who were with Jesus in the various passion narratives. The bearded man at the top is Joseph of Arimathea. The other bearded man is Nicodemus. The beardless man is John (often identified as the Beloved Disciple) who stood at the foot of the cross with Mary also shown here. Mary appears again in the same red garment and blue cloak we saw in the Nativity Window. Although there is no image of the Crucifixion, the sacrificial symbolism of the cross and the eucharist appear in the caption: Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world. These words from the Gospel of John were used in the catholic expressions of the Holy Eucharist as the priest shows the consecrated host to the people. Grief is what happens to love when love is mingled with loss. This window invites us to hold onto the grief present in the human experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Ascension of Our Lord</image:title>
<image:caption>The final scene in the picture window series is the Ascension of Jesus described in greatest length in the Gospel of Luke. Looking out directly to the viewer is surrounded by red rays and a mandorla of clouds. He once again raises his hand in blessing, now apparently blessing the whole world. Four disciples kneel in the foreground. The Beloved Disciple appears in this scene as well; he the beardless figure on the left. Below them is a simple field of green grass. Again, the choice of caption is interesting. It reads: We have a High Priest that is passed into the heavens. Instead of a passage from the gospels, the caption comes from the Letter to the Hebrews. By evoking Jesus as High Priest again introduces sacrificial imagery. This window’s original location near the altar would have opened the door to a more sacrificial interpretation of the Holy Communion celebrated there. This image invites us to reflect on the idea that there is more to the human experience than any of us can grasp.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Three Tall Tiffany Windows</image:title>
<image:caption>The Tiffany windows at Trinity have an abstract almost painterly feel characteristic of Tiffany’s earlier design. While these windows were installed over a period of time, it appears that effort was made to ensure that this feel was maintained. At the time, glass studios like Tiffany produced a catalogue of typical works. None of the windows at Trinity come from the catalogue. All of them are unique and custom designed for the space. The three rounded windows in the chapel are excellent examples of this abstract style. While there are symbols and images, the images are created through the choice of glass rather than glass paint. It is a little bit unclear where the image begins and ends. The side windows have images of the four Evangelists (upper left: Eagle for St. John; lower left: Lion for St. Mark; upper right: Winged Man for St. Matthew; lower left: Ox for St. Luke). The center window is dominated by a cross. Above the cross is a stylized version of the Alpha and Omega representing the Christ is the beginning and the end (Revelation 22:13). Below the cross is a Chi Ro, the first two letters of Christ in Greek.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Angels Making Music</image:title>
<image:caption>The two windows in the Choir Room reflect this room’s purpose. Built somewhat later in 1899, the Choir Room was the only major addition to the church after its construction. The window to the north depicts seven angels playing instruments. In the center, the harpist in red robes together with their green wings, dominates the space. The choice of instruments – harp, pipes, lutes, cymbals, viol – reflect the late Gothic Revival medievalism so often found in churches of the time. The faces of the angels appear in soft, almost painterly focus. These windows are given in memory of Charles and Sarah Lanier.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Resurrection Appearances (with surpliced choir)</image:title>
<image:caption>The window facing east features two scenes from Jesus’s Resurrection appearances. The left-hand scene comes from the Gospel of Matthew (Matt. 28:1-10). Mary Magdalene and ‘the other Mary’ come to the tomb early in the morning only to find it empty. They are met by an angel with ‘an appearance like lightning’ and dressed in clothing ‘white as snow.’ The women are charged with returning to Jerusalem to carry the message of the resurrection. The scene on the right-hand side comes from the Gospel of John (John 20:11-18). After having reported back about the empty tomb, Mary Magdalene remains weeping. She is met by a figure she cannot identify (she thinks he is the gardener). When Jesus calls her by name, she understanding that this is the resurrected Jesus and she reaches out to touch him. He tells her that she cannot cling him because he must return to the Father. Above the two central images, three angels play music in the roundel. Below the two resurrections images is a scene of a choir like would have been known in 1899. Fourteen men and boys appear to be practicing – as if they were in the Choir Room itself. The choir below mirrors the angels in the roundel, representing the union of earth in heaven in singing the glory of God and the glory of Christ’s resurrection. While not unusual in 1899, men and boys choirs vested in surplices were only recently accepted in the American Episcopal Church. These sorts of choirs were well known in English Cathedrals, but less common in the United States. Choirs like these typically appeared together with significantly increased sophistication in the overall musical repertoire in the church. This would have been consistent with Trinity’s place in the Lenox community.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Cross and Doves (Chester Arthur Window)</image:title>
<image:caption>This first window on the left (as you face the altar) is dedicated to the memory of President Chester Arthur who helped lay the cornerstone for the church. Frederick Frelinghuysen, Arthur’s Secretary of State, was a parishioner at the time, and he asked Arthur to participate. Arthur died soon after. Other than this act, there is no known connection between Arthur and the parish. This window is simple in its representation but the glass itself gives the piece a richness and depth. At the center is a cross sitting on a orb – often representing the primacy of the cross over the world. Surrounding the cross are grape vines with ripened grape clusters hanging down. Grapes are typically a reference to with wine in Holy Communion. Four doves sit among the vines. The doves are treated in a minimal manner with little use of glass painting. The cross and vines sit under an almost architectural frame. Above the frame is a seven branch menorah flanked by an Alpha and an Omega. If you get close to the window, you can see that the small yellow pieces in the frame are not flat but instead are textured pieces of glass. Interestingly, these textured canes are actually clear glass which get their color from a second flat piece behind them. This technique greatly adds to the depth and complexity of the color.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Five Saints (Caroline Cushing Wilde Window))</image:title>
<image:caption>The most figurative of the Tiffany windows shows five saints gathered together. In the center is Saint Cecilia holding pipes. On the left stands a bearded man with a sword and letters, probably St. Paul. However, this figure does not have the high forehead we usually see (for example, see the image of St. Paul carved into the pulpit). Behind this figure is a beardless man, usually St. John the Evangelist. Moving clockwise, there is the gray haired image of Saint Benedict, holding an abbot’s crozier. On the right, facing the viewer, is the figure of Mary Magdalene. She holding a jar and wearing a red cloak. In the past, Mary Magdalene was identified as the woman who brings an alabaster jar of ointment and anoints Jesus’ feet in a sign of humility and penitence (Luke 7:27-50). The conflict in the story comes because she is from ‘the city’ and a ‘sinner’. This is code for prostitute, and Jesus is challenged for associating with a prostitute. While this is a touching story of generosity and redemption, there is absolutely no reason to link this unnamed woman with Mary Magdalene, one of the only women named in the New Testament who is not associated with either a husband or a son. Unfortunately, the Church could only conceive of a strong, independent woman in terms of a redeemed sinner. The Church today rejects this interpretation of Mary Magdalene, and rightfully places the emphasis on her ministry in sharing the news of the Resurrection to the disciples, making her the Apostle to the Apostles. This window is dedicated to the memory of Caroline Cushing Wilde, the first wife of the Reverend Justin Field, the rector of Trinity when this building was constructed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - St. Elizabeth of Hungary (Sarah Spencer Morgan Window)</image:title>
<image:caption>The first window on the right as you face the altar was given in memory of Sarah Spencer Morgan, a benefactor of Trinity. This was the first of the third phase of windows at Trinity. After many years of using Tiffany and Company, the patronage returned to Heaton, Butler, and Bayne. The image appears to be that of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, although she does not have a halo which is quite strange and it makes the attribution a little uncertain. According to tradition, St. Elizabeth was secretly taking bread to poor and she met her husband Ludwig. She hid the bread in her cloak. He suspecting that she was stealing from the treasury demanded that she reveal what she was hiding. Instead of bread were red and white roses. The miracle of the roses clearly appears in the window. The finely dressed woman carries keys indicating that she is a royal woman managing the household. She offers bread to the three children, two of whom kneel in humility to her. The children wear stylized makeshift garments. In the background, red and white roses seem to tumble down. Above, the Holy Spirit as a dove pours down heavenly grace. The whole scene is set within a rich Classical architectural frame. The only thing missing is the halo for the central figure. The choice of St. Elizabeth of Hungary for Sarah Spencer Morgan makes a lot of sense. Both were wealthy powerful women who were also philanthropists. This window invites us to reflect on the interplay between how we want to be remembered and the legacies we leave behind.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - An Angel (Sarah Schermerhorn Window, after 1903)</image:title>
<image:caption>The second window on the right as your face the altar shows an Angel with broad gold wings and a hand raised in greeting. The Angel stands within a richly decorated architectural frame. Cherub heads with winds form the capitals of the flanking columns. The Angel holds a palm branch in their left hand, and their right hand is raised. The Angel’s wings are a rich yellow gold and the feathers are wide. The Angel is dressed in heavy flowing robes evoking an almost Classical feel. They are also wearing a stole crossed across their chest. In the background, the sky is bright yellow at the bottom giving way to a deep blue at the top. Perhaps this is the Angel greeting the women at the Tomb at dawn on Easter Day. The window is primarily decorative with little sense of story or scene. The face and details are painted giving this Heaton, Butler, and Bayne window it’s characteristic realism. The only detail to note is the crossed stole. This is the way that priests traditionally wore stoles in the celebration of the Eucharist. There is nothing unusual about this choice, but it was a choice. They could have depicted the Angel without this nod to more catholic Eucharistic practice. The caption reads “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation” Hebrews 1:14.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Blessed Virgin Mary (Ann Schermerhorn Window, after 1907)</image:title>
<image:caption>The third window on the right as your face the altar features an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Unlike the other later three Heaton, Butler, and Bayne windows, the central figure is not framed by architectural features. Instead, Mary stands almost like a statue on a stone plinth and topped by a stone canopy decorated in a medieval gothic style. Her gown is a traditional blue, and her cloak is decorated with the letter M in gold with red accents. She holds a lily in her right hand. She is depicted wearing the veil and wimple of a female monastic. This was common in medieval depictions of Mary as nuns and other female monastics were regarded as paragons of holiness and virtue as was Mary. The figure and the stone background appear to be in front of a simple glass window. Set into the window are four seraph heads, each with six wings. The angels look on Mary. Apart from the probable image of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, this is the only other window dedicated to a single clearly identifiable saint. It is interesting that the saint chosen is the Blessed Virgin Mary. Among those who practice devotion to the saints, devotion to Mary is the most common. It should be noted that devotion to the saints was not common in the Episcopal Church of the early 20th century. It is not unusual in Episcopal Churches to have saints represented in windows, but most of those churches have numerous saints. Here we only have a few, so this again represents a conscious choice to represent the figure with the greatest devotional weight. The composition is interesting as well. Mary appears almost to be a statue in a niche. Whether this was architecturally impossible at Trinity or it was not politically palatable, this window almost serves the function of having a statue of Mary in the church.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - The Fisherman (John Sanford Barnes Window, after 1911)</image:title>
<image:caption>The fourth window on the right as your face the altar depicts a sailor holding an oar and a net standing directly in front of a sail boat. Another boat sails the choppy waters behind and three seagulls fly against a red streaked sky. This window, produced by Heaton, Butler, and Bayne, is, on the surface quite evocative. The figure is marked as a saint by the halo, but he does not have any clear markers as to who this is. It could be Peter, or James, or John, but it is unclear. Furthermore, the material below the main image makes things even more confusing. The anchor is the traditional symbol of St. Clement (Bishop of Rome, d. 99AD), and this is clearly not Clement. The caption reads: And so he bringeth them to the haven where they would be (Psalm 107:30). This would seem to indicate that the figure is some sort of metaphor for either Christ with the boat representing the Ark of the Church. The solution to this puzzling window is quite simple. John Sanford Barnes was an avid boater and he exercised considerable editorial direction on the window. This window is a reminder that, even in churches, sometimes there might not be a deeper meaning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Window Tour - Rose Window: The Glory of the Setting Sun</image:title>
<image:caption>The massive Rose Window at the west end of the church is the crown jewel of the stained glass here at Trinity Church. Designed by Tiffany and Company, this window is constructed in a highly stylized and painterly manner. The color and texture of the hundreds of glass pieces give the window its stunning appeal. Within the design, there are arches evoking a sense of structure and architecture. A few Christian symbols are embedded as well: a cross, an IHS (symbol of Jesus), and three fish. The majority of the window is decorative. This window is best viewed on a sunny afternoon. The church is oriented on an east/west axis so this window catches the light of the afternoon sun as it sets in the west behind the Berkshire Hills. In the later 19th century, there would have been afternoon services on Sundays, so many people would have been able to see this window in its glory. The window is meant to be an imitation of the burning sun shining onto the People of God.</image:caption>
